Tips to store Indian groceries for longer shelf life
Staying alone far from your family abroad and cooking food on your own is a difficult thing, especially when you’re missing your native food. You try hard to find authentic Indian groceries and when you get them, it’s even harder to save them for a few days of cooking. There are a lot of things like vegetables, herbs, spices, and dairy products that can get stale quickly and be useless in no time. So, here are the tips that will help you store and use Indian groceries a little longer and avoid wastage.
The most common ways of storing Indian groceries are by freezing, refrigerating, and keeping them dry far from moisture and sunlight. Let’s check which one can be stored better in which condition.
Grains & Pulses - Storing grains and pulses is quite a task. A little bit of moisture can spoil them so make sure you keep them in a cool and dry place. You may keep them in airtight containers to prevent moisture and use them for as long as a couple of months or even longer.
Dairy products - You may use the freezing method to prevent dairy products like paneer, and cheese from spoiling. Whereas milk and yogurt can be refrigerated for longer shelf life. All you have to do is to unfreeze them an hour before every time you use them in cooking and that’s it.
Vegetables, fruits, & herbs - Indian vegetables and fruits take the different processes of storage for longer life. For example, potatoes and onions need not be in the fridge if you keep them in the fridge they might spoil earlier than expected. But you should refrigerate ripe tomatoes to prevent further ripening.
The same goes with fruits like apples and oranges, they can go as long as a week without refrigerating but if you want to stop the ripening process, refrigerate them. You can store herbs like mint, spinach and cilantro by soaking their roots into a bowl full of water.
Spices - Indian spices like coriander powder, chili powder, and garam masala are difficult to find. But when you do, you can put them in airtight containers to keep moisture-free and store them for up to 2-4 months. You can even keep them longer if you let them soak in the sunlight every 2-3 weeks and place them in a cool and dry place.
Fried snack items - Fried snack items can be stored in two ways depending on their cooking process. You can store the snacks that have wet ingredients in the sealed plastic bags. Though, the dry snack items can be stored in a cool and dry place in airtight containers.
